May 23 2008 Philippine Olympic Festival Mindanao games in Tubod, Lanao Del Norte.

We had two participants in Wrestling (greco-roman and Free style): Junel Canoy and Klint Badiang. Because there were no opponents in their categories, are these two players automatic finalist for the national games in October. In the judo tournament we had 4 players. There was a good competition.

Despite good effort from the others only Richard Valledor could reach the National Finals with his second place.

Cesar Piado became third.

The other players were Richard Salvana and Mark Juhn Badiang.

About Us:

The basis from our club is Judo, Seiryoku Zenyo (maximum result with minimal energy) and Jita Kyoei (maximum well being for everybody).

Only because of circumstances we have to adjust our ways.

  • We have to consider:
  • * people have only little money
  • * Judo suits are expensive
  • * There are only a few clubs around and still they are far
  • * Tournaments are also few and far (less than 2 times a year)
  • * The new judo rule updates (no holding of legs, less time for ne-waza)
  • * Possible to play more is by joining wrestling tournaments
  • * Possible to play Brazilian Jiu-jitsu
  • * there are different styles of wrestling close to judo: greco-roman, free style and submission wrestling
  • * we got judo suits donated by friends in The Netherlands

  • With this we came to our way of teaching judo:
  • The practice starts with judo basics. Because of the methods and the principal rules of judo, for us, that is the safest way, except there is no judo suit (just hold always the wrist).
  • For our own private tournaments we developed "freestyle judo". Most important differences with official judo rules are: no judo suit, holding legs is allowed, longer fighting on the floor, possibility to continue when standing while opponent is still on the floor and a different scoring system. Judo wrestling has only Yuko and Ippon. Compared with judo: yuko is still Yuko, waza-ari and ippon are now Ippon. Yuko is 2 points and Ippon 4 points, winner is the first who has 10 points or more. Advantages: there is always a second change and for spectators it is more easy to understand and closer to real fight than IJF / PAJA judo.
After their examination for 5th kuy (yellow belt) the judoka's can earn their judo suit. These judo suits are donations from our friends in The Netherlands. See www.judopak.nl.tt for the collection campaign and the biggest donations.

We like to expose the our players as  much as possible. While there are only few judo tournaments around, we prepare them also in sports like wrestling and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.  So that they can compete also in other tournaments.  The styles are compatable, only you have to observe the different rules and adjust the techniques accordingly. In the end we have complete skilled fighters

Important for us is: the more the students can play on tournaments, the more experience they get and the more fun it is.

A possibility for the members with a few years experience is to continue with submission wrestling. A big part is again the same as in judo but hold downs don't count, only submissions (including neck, leg, ankle and wrist locks).
